The Missing Thread Exhibition — Exploring the Untold Stories of Black British Fashion

TGB x Somerset House

Inclusivity and self-expression are at the heart of TGB. That's why, for Black History Month, we've teamed up with Somerset House to host a pop-up nail bar as part of The Missing Thread exhibition. Expect an explosion of bright and bold colours and lavish nail designs, all inspired by Black communities.

The exhibition

So, what can you expect from The Missing Thread exhibition? It celebrates often untold stories of Black culture and creativity. Spanning from the 1970s to the present day, it charts the evolving landscape of Black British culture and its influence on Britain's rich design history — in particular, fashion and beauty.

Nailing new trends

Nails play a huge role in the fashion and beauty industry, featuring front and centre in magazines, music videos and celebrity red-carpet looks. But did you know that the art form grew out of styles pioneered by Black communities? And it's those styles that we're celebrating this month.

So many popular nail trends of today originated or gained prominence within Black communities. Eye-catching acrylics, statement stiletto nails, and other iconic styles. Black women have been at the helm of nail art's modern cultural resurgence.

Inspiring icons

Famous nail trends make history. The first woman of colour to appear on the cover of US Vogue was Donyale Luna, and still people reference her statement acrylic nails featured in the shoot. Then there's Janet Jackson in the futuristic Busta Rhymes video for What's it Gonna Be?! sporting her infamous hoop-pierced nails.

Our TGB pop-up

In celebration of lavish, bold, statement designs that originated in the Black community, some of our incredible Black nail techs will be popping up at The Missing Thread exhibition on select dates, painting nail sets inspired by Black culture.

The Missing Thread exhibition is open until the 7th January 2024 at Somerset House, London. For more information and to purchase tickets, please click the link here.
