Black History Month – A Q&A With Jasmine Corinna

As part of Black History Month, we’ve been catching up with some of our TGB techs to hear about their experiences in the industry, key career influences, and how they got to where they are today.

1. Tell us about yourself.

Hey guys! I’m Jasmine (aka @nailsby_jasminecorinna), a 30-year-old nail tech from Suffolk. I’ve recently celebrated both my birthday and the fourth anniversary of my business. I’m so grateful to have a career doing something that I love so much.

2. How did you get into the industry?

After being made redundant from my retail job, I decided to take the leap and focus on something that I really loved, after putting it off for so long.

3. What do you specialise in?

I’m a natural nail specialist, focusing on nail care, gel polish manicures and BIAB™ treatments. I love to see the results my clients get with consistent BIAB™ appointments, finished with a beautiful gel polish colour and Iuvo Skincare.

4. Who’s your inspiration?

My inspiration will always be my mum, dad and brother. I’m very lucky to have such hardworking, supportive people around me.

Celeb wise…Rihanna is everything and it’s inspiring to see her continuously grow her billion-dollar brand. I also love Steven Bartlett for invaluable business and life advice.

5. Have you had to overcome any obstacles to get to where you are today?

Yes, and it makes me so much more grateful to be where I am! Lockdowns, the breakup of a long-term relationship, moving locations. Starting from scratch and rebuilding has, at times, been a little hard to navigate, but it’s all a blessing in disguise. The last two years have been a dream, and every obstacle has been so worth it.

6. What’s been your ‘pinch me’ moment?

My ‘pinch me’ moment was working my first season at London and Paris Fashion Week; my career has allowed me to meet such wonderful people and has taken me to some beautiful locations. Alexander McQueen was my dream show and I can’t thank Aliyah Johnson and Ama Quashie enough for giving me the opportunity to work with them.

7. Favourite nail trend?

I’m not a huge fan of trends BUT I can get on board with a little swirl nail, and I love tortoise shell for fall.

8. What advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?

Never compare yourself to other nail techs. Everyone is doing their own thing, in their own time, and each tech defines ‘success’ differently. If you’re happy with your work, clients, content and overall business then that’s all that matters. Focus on self-improvement and creating your own vibe.

On a practical level, work out your overheads, add in your experience/knowledge and charge your worth. Remember, just because local walk-ins may be ‘cheap’, it doesn’t mean you need to be. Our services can often be undervalued, but if you’re using high quality products and tools to provide a high-end service, your price should reflect that.

9. How would you like to see the industry change?

Unfortunately, the industry still doesn’t show much diversity. There are so many talented nail techs from all over the world, yet I see the same style of pics time and time again. I would like to see brands post content that reflects the multicultural talent in our industry.

10. What have you learnt along the way that would be valuable to pass on?

Not to give into the hype of buying expensive products or tools – price doesn’t always reflect quality. My favourite natural, vegan brand (Iuvo) is relatively inexpensive when compared to the hundreds of pounds I’ve invested in other brands previously.

11. What was your education journey into becoming a nail tech?

I’m self-taught, but I took a course to gain my qualification. Further education is so important. I like to book myself onto multiple courses a year to keep my knowledge and services relevant and up-to-date. You never stop learning and even passing conversations with other techs can be so helpful.
